Leopold Kozeluch

The Czech composer Leopold Antonin Koželuh studied in Prague with his uncle Jan Antonin (1738-1814) and afterwards with Dussek. In 1778 he moved to Vienna where he studied further with Albrechtsberger and became friends with Mozart. Koželuh taught piano at the Viennese court and was appointed court chapel master and Kammerkomponist after the death of Mozart in 1791.
In his works, he is a transition composer who continues to build on Haydn and Mozart, but also anticipates on Schubert and Weber. His oeuvre is fairly extensive with 30 symphonies, 13 piano concertos, 6 cello concertos, at least 2 clarinet concertos, one octet, 6 string quartets, 30 piano trios, piano works, songs, oratorios and operas. Moreover, he made arrangements of nineteen Scottish folk songs.
